Kristen has 25 years of career experience as an artist and since she was a child has always been a creative force to be reckoned with. Her passion is founded in studying and abstracting the imagery and reality of people, flora, and fauna, often overlooked in our world. I met her in 2015 and we became fast friends. In 2016, she was diagnosed with a rare form Ovarian Cancer called Germ Cell Ovarian Cancer. This diagnosis only deepened and secured our relationship as I am a 13 year survivor of cancer as well. From October 2016- June 2017 she was not able to even pick up a brush to do the very activity that made her feel alive, painting.. Ever since I was a little girl growing up through an abusive childhood art has been a therapeutic remedy. It was a way to get away from my toxic violent reality. I was considered the weak one in my family, simply because I was small and frail in stature and I looked, acted and spoke differently. I art I found a refuge; a place of solace. I could create a world where I belong. A world where I was understood and valued. It was a world in which I could escape and become invisible from the abusive reality of my every day existence. In my world of art I would be left alone for it was understood that there I was to be respected because I alone in my family had that talent. This was where I found strength, but more so where I would find peace and happiness. Throughout my adult life I would often find myself in abusive situations or the subject of being bullied, but it would not be until I rediscovered my aptitude for art, something I thought had long abandoned me, that I once again found an outlet for my frustrations and a place of peace. After over 20 years of helping and encouraging countless students and adults find their happiness by following their dreams I am left with my own struggle with PTSD, anxiety and depression. Thus, I am on a fixed disability income and unable to work in the universities as I previously have. I now have to redirect my path. I finally set out on a path of paying attention to my own physical and mental health needs. Art is where I once again find my solace, my peace, my happiness. It is where I find my strength. It is where I find my voice in this world. I believe that after years of putting other's needs before my own only to find myself burnt out in the process, that it is time for me to finally do something for myself. I strongly realize that in order to help others, one must lead by example. It is for that reason that I finally got up the courage to nominate myself as an "artist in need" (hence the last minute submission). I want to teach art to children and seniors to let them be encouraged that it's never to early nor too late to follow your dreams. I'm sure people out there have it much worse than I do. "Starving Artist" is noble in a book, but in reality, when you're worried about paying rent and eating, not so much. I was born into a family of artists. Being creative was second nature. I believe in knowing your mediums and knowing your craft. Art in whatever form, has always seen me through tragedies and setbacks. In 2019, things were going so well, I participated in multiple shows and was headed towards putting a solo gallery show of my own in my hometown, where I could repay the crazy weird place that still inspires me and created who I am as an artist. I wanted to give back and bring joy.. But Covid hit. My freelance work practically dried up and I'm not the greatest person at self-promotion. Art is not a frivolous hobby. It uplifts. It inspires. I would like to nominate myself. Art has become a very important part of my life because I paint my feelings on a canvas (“ I paint my feelings when words are not sufficient to express them”). I use the direction of every brush stroke, the color of the paint, even the size of the canvas to convey a message. For as long as I can remember, I have always admired art. As a child I always enjoyed creating but never had any type of skill. I then fractured my dominant hand in the seventh grade. I was beyond shocked and grateful to discover my love for art was accompanied with skills I never possessed. From that moment on, I have not stopped creating. I have grown and developed so much as an artist. My pieces speak to the experiences of the women in my life and the experiences of women of color. My goal is for women to see themselves in my prices and become inspired to continue to develop and grow. I am currently focusing on introducing youth to art to help build their social-emotional learning skills. Réna was born in Barbados and moved to the United States when she was four years old. She is currently based in Long Island, New York and describes her artistry as a blend between surrealism, realism, and abstract art. Réna's work is often influenced by her Black womanhood and her Barbadian roots, often seeking to reshape preconceived ideas of what those identities mean in ways that are educational and empowering; the piece attached to this application, a dot painting entitled "Space", was created the night before her swearing in ceremony as a U.S. citizen late in 2020. This prize would empower Réna as an artist as it would provide additional support to the growth RéCreates, the business platform she created to host and share her art with the world. Art as a Homecoming: I told myself I’d never write again and that drawing was something best left in the past. But fate has a way of reuniting you with your destined path. Out of a fear of failure and pursuit of perfectionism, my anxieties made many writing processes a difficult experience. Not only that, but the expression of myself, a daunting endeavor. Growing up I felt pressure to be perfect and not make mistakes. Holding myself to such high expectations, gave me direction but also created a rift between my relationship with myself. 2019 was the blooming of my spiritual awakening and the beginning of my dark night of the soul; the awakening of my spiritual depression and emergence into the chaos cycle of death and rebirth. Philosophical contemplations on the relevance of meaning, life purpose, self-awareness and healing were reignited through a spiritual foundation. In 2020, I proposed a monthly art challenge to my friends. When I finally ventured into the world of viewing and studying art, it was an eye-opening experience because there was room for everyone to be themselves. Near the end, I was behind. I told myself to just do what I could do and whatever I did was enough because I showed up. I reminded myself I need to have the bravery to complete an unfinished project without perfection. I completed the art challenge. I told myself I never wanted to do it again. But then, I reflected on how the challenge went. I viewed art from a philosophical and spiritual practice and it changed everything. I found out my relationship with art had nothing to do with only art. Instead, art brought to the surface my relationship with myself. I dreaded I couldn’t do something I’ve never done, perfectly the first time. I became anxious when I couldn’t do what I was seeing; felt pressured not meeting the standards. It was hard to try your best and still not be where you wanted. It brought to the surface buried perceptions and anxieties ever present in my psyche. Each meeting with art, was a confrontation with my unconscious treatment of myself. My thinking and learning processes were exposed. I decided 2021 will be another year pursuing art so I can continue practicing how to guide myself out of my comfort level with patience, understanding, unconditional love, empathy and faith in the process of human learning. I told myself I’d never write and draw again, but I guess that wasn’t my destined path. Every time I draw, I become one step closer to who I was destined to become. Who would have thought that when things were falling apart...life was actually falling into place? After watching a video about art journaling as a healing practice. I was brought to tears. I felt a sliver of what so many have talked about, using art as a medium of healing. This gift would empower me to branch into art journaling and other art mediums. tw_user 168 Weeks

Karissa Taylor has been a lifelong friend of mine. She is a true artist but sometimes feels she doesn't deserve that title. She has yet to have her big break and struggles to sell anything, like so many people; she's certainly in good company. It doesn't matter what other job she's doing, she finds a way to implement her creativity for good. As someone who struggles with serious mental illness, Karissa helped me discover the benefits of art making which has saved my life more than once. Taylor recently founded an online studio on Instagram, @pinkshedstudios, for a group of artists with mental illnesses to give them a platform to show their work publicly while maintaining their anonymity. Her last job, she worked as a counselor for kids with mental illnesses/substance addiction and used art to motivate the kids through their program. Upon graduation, she would make them a drawing of whatever they wanted completely free of charge. Her artwork is unique. She began as a traditional artist with a natural talent for drawing. As she recieved her BFA, her work went from detailed oriented, representational work to a more abstract experimental style. She discovered a process of using smoke and soot to draw and create paintings which has drawn much interest as it is an unusual material. Taylor wishes to be able to explore more with this medium. Liv, a single mama to three spanning 3rd to 8th grade, had just assumed board president of a community-based health service non-profit. She was a professional in Applied Behavioral Analysis with a graduate degree and extensive experience in that specialized field. Flat-brimmed hat, hoodie, and mis-matched Vans, that’s how she rolled after clocking-out. When she wasn’t performing as best as she could Egmont, Op. 84: Overture on her out-of-tune aged piano, she was crafting with her daughters, unicorns and glitter, to their fullest hearts’ delight. Times were good, until her son fell gravely sick. Her teenage son is autistic. If you know autism, you know environment and routine is critical to their well-being. Without them or disruption, even a glitch to Wi-Fi while streaming, can be the difference between a peaceful evening and behavioral explosions, inclusive of physical attacks. Scratching and bites aren’t out of the ordinary, especially during a pandemic, when everyone’s “normal” is completely altered. Needless to say, COVID-19 has undone so much for autistic families. But this was the easy part for Liv relative to what ensued. Since then, Liv has nurtured her beloved son from two months of bed-ridden illness and endured multiple attacks per day for six months, including a dislocated patella injury, complete with excruciating pain and an ambulance ride. She lost her job, reached clinically defined exhaustion, incurred an eviction notice, and for months warded off a DV perpetrator who didn’t know the meaning of “no, I’m not interested”. The call to the police after a surprise visit to her front door is what finally stopped his scary behavior. And somewhere along the way, they gained the support of child protective service, but not after being ignorantly “reported” by neighbors. This, while she grieved loved ones who didn’t survive COVID-19 and incurred mounting attorney fees due to unrelenting family dispute. How does one weather all of this? For Liv, it was her art. As a girl, Liv lost herself in her grandma’s fashion magazines and drummed up imagination on how she could design and produce her own house of fashion. As a young adult, she dabbled, designing and producing purses and wedding gowns, but nothing that would substantiate her dreams. It wasn’t until a few months ago she launched her multidisciplinary approach to art, ranging from designed and sewn masks to painting of children’s attire to murals. Presently, she’s painting murals featuring Indigenous imagery in the halls of Flagstaff High School (Arizona). She’s turned to her art as a means to hope, healing, and resilience despite and perhaps because of life’s attempts to knock her down. Art is who she is, just as much as, the love she has for her children is who she is. It seems as though the dismantling of life’s comfort has unlocked her unyielding desire to live life to its fullest. If there’s ever a time and an artist to support, that is now, and Liv is that. For years, I've looked to art as a way to cope with most of life's problems, using it as a stress reliever and as a way to express myself without having to speak. It wasn't until 2019 when I looked to art the most to get me out of and help me through my most challenging years. From November of 2017 to April of 2019, I was homeless and in that time where I felt so lost, I also felt like I had found myself through painting. Being homeless brought out every emotion in me but also brought out my love and passion for art more. For me, art was that one thing that kept me going during a time where everything wasn't going well. I picked up my paintbrush and haven't been able to put it down since, which has allowed me to inspire so many others. And seeing that I'm able to inspire so many people makes me want to continue on this path and see where it's taking me. Receiving this prize will help me do just that. It'll help me in my artistic journey, allowing me to explore and learn more about art through the study and practices of working with different mediums and materials. Art has always played some part in my life. An unstable upbringing made it very difficult for me to understand my own emotions. The stigma at the time was that mental illness was a sign of weakness. It was a personal issue, to be kept quiet. This made it hard to be able to express emotions in a healthy way. My grandmother raised me to use art as a means of expression, as she did through her cooking. So I turned to art. Whenever I started planning out my next project, it has always felt like an escape from all of my destructive thoughts and helped me grasp onto life in a way that I felt more in control and confident. I work with several, very different, mediums. Two that have started to define my typical style are painting and sketching. I find them natural and relaxing. When I start painting with my acrylic set I go to my own little world, that is cute, in odd ways. Colors are bold and earthy. Creating pieces is how I fit into my surroundings. Making art is how I meet new people, it’s how I met my best friends, new opportunities. For me and my fellow artist friends, we are defined by our art. Our art holds all of our thoughts, secrets, and experiences. Our art contains us, just a tiny glimpse of who we are inside. Winning this would actually be a dream come true for me. This year, I finally felt confident enough to start my own small embroidery business. I've been studying the ins & outs of running a small business, researching the market, working on designs, ect.. Creating art is not so much what I do, as it is who I am.  As an expression of my interior realm, art allows me to lose myself, and find myself, at the same time. Preoccupied with questions, art seeks the answers that drive me, providing me a window through which I can observe my surroundings and a frame in which to interpret my response.  From the art studio to the kitchen, art is the primary means by which I communicate. Art has fostered the connection to my community and my students, especially teens.  It has provided me the opportunity to bond with many at risk teens that have experienced illness, loss, asylum, handicaps, economic obstacles and the general challenges of adolescence, some of which I remain in contact with years later. Giving these students a safe space to create and express themselves, free from judgement nurtures us all. Art is the reason that I am a teacher and mentor, and always a student.  Throughout my work I use found objects to archive our link of impermanence to the id and the ego, tethering our psyche to its environment. Though clay is central to my work, found objects are integral to its story.  Drawing on costumes and disguises, my work blurs the boundaries of social, political and cultural norms while conveying an edgy narrative.  My figures address identity, creating a story that is subtly confrontational.  As an artist, I am interested in the tension created not only by content, but also by surface and texture.  The intricately carved details of my figures augment the mundanity of the discarded object:  a mere reflection of our temporal existence. This temporal existence, coupled with the compulsion to make, is the inherent motivation driving me to create art, to make objects that fill a voided space. These objects are meant to intrigue and challenge the viewer to identify or connect to one of the many aspects of its creation.  Ceramics is a flirtation with permanence.  Through its very nature, clay has helped define existence. From figurines to pottery vessels, ceramics has enhanced human life for over 25,000 years.  I am compelled to continue to color the world through teaching and making ceramic objects.  Your financial consideration would offer sustenance normally provided through teaching and sales which has proven challenging during this pandemic, as many artistic and cultural events have been canceled.  An award would allow me to focus on making art rather than worry about managing my finances. It would help me to maintain the critical connection that I’ve developed with my teen students. Assistance would free me to further explore ideas and purchase new materials and equipment, namely, latex.  I am fascinated by the ethereal quality of latex, by its texture and the potential of integrating latex and ceramics. 1. Sponsor: (the "Giveaway") is sponsored by The Jerry Goldstein Foundation and Jerry's Artarama, 6104 Maddry Oaks Ct, Raleigh, NC (the “Sponsor”). The Sponsor is responsible for all aspects of the Giveaway. Participation in the Giveaway constitutes the participant's full and unconditional agreement to these Official Rules, and Sponsor’s decisions, which are final and binding in all matters related to the Giveaway.
2. Eligibility: Giveaway (the "Giveaway") is only open to participants who are legal residents of United States, and who are 18+ at the time of entry (the “Entrant”). Employees of Jerry's Artarama (the "Sponsor"), their respective affiliates, subsidiaries, advertising and promotion agencies, suppliers and their immediate family members and/or those living in the same household of each are not eligible to participate in the Giveaway. 4. How to Enter: To "Nominate An Artist In Need" must be entered by submitting an entry using the online form provided on this site. The entry must fulfill all requirements, as specified, to be eligible. Entries that are not complete or do not adhere to the rules or specifications may be disqualified at the sole discretion of The Jerry Goldstein Foundation and Jerry's Artarama. You may enter only once and you must fill in the information requested. You may not enter more times than indicated by using multiple e-mail addresses, identities or devices in an attempt to circumvent the rules. If you use fraudulent methods or otherwise attempt to circumvent the rules your submission may be removed from eligibility at the sole discretion of Jerry's Artarama.

6. Judging: The entries will be awarded based on: Recipients will be chosen by in house members of Jerry's and The Jerry Goldstein Foundation based on meeting all the criteria of submitting a story and image. Judging will be conducted by Jerry's Artarama How To Enter - Entries accepted only through online form.

Nominations must have all the information properly filled in. You will be notified by email if awarded. The $1,000 Amex Gift Card will arrive via mail to a verified address. Can not be exchanged or transferred to another party or person.
