I first sat on a Galanter & Jones chair in 2018. It was a chilly evening in the Bay Area, but the chair kept me pleasantly warm even though it was made of concrete. That’s because this Helios chair, like other Galanter & Jones seating, was heated: You plug it into an outlet and use the adjustable dial to set it to your ideal temperature.

That chair belongs to my sister, Connie Yang, and her wife, Suzanne Turell, who had, for the two years previous, regularly driven 40 miles each way from their home to Flora Grubb Gardens, the plant store in San Francisco, expressly to sit on the Galanter & Jones chairs there before finally getting their own. The glass-fiber-reinforced concrete on a powder-coated stainless-steel frame has built-in drainage and can be used indoors or out, and the UV-stable pigments mixed into the concrete won’t fade even after years of sitting in the sun. The smooth, curved-concrete seating is modern in design and comfortable to sit on. And if you or your home tend to feel cold, it’s a cozier source of warmth than many other kinds of heating — think of a cat in a patch of sunlight or being in a hot tub without having to get wet.

Friends who came by and sat in the chair were instant converts — my sister and her wife know of a dozen who have each bought one or several lounge chairs and seats after trying it first at their house. (I was also a convert, but unfortunately it has not been the right fit for our home — yet.) A few years later, after they had moved to Santa Cruz, they sprung for the Helios Metreo, a three-seater that they placed in their backyard in front of a firepit and under the redwoods and eucalyptus that surround their house.

“It changed our relationship with our backyard completely after we got it,” Connie told me. “We never really sat out there before.” Now it’s the seat that kids and cats and dogs are drawn to, the spot where guests congregate when a dinner party is winding down. It’s the seat I make a beeline for whenever I visit.
