My name is Linlin and like many of you, I'm also a Quaran"teen". The world right now is in an unstable status, but as we continue forward to the future, we hold onto treasured memories of being together. Interaction is probably the most equivalent to joy, and right now we don't have that. But we do have art, and art is uplifting. My inspiration is the world in all its capacity to redeem, reform, and reconnect. I'd like to share my take on the end of the book, Purple Rules. Here are some notes... 1) The people of We have rounded heads because at the end of the day people are all human. "All people need color to be people at all." 2) There is symbolism behind the light source on the first page, which hits Jefferson’s back and casts a shadow on the king’s isolated crown, representing his downfall 3) The layout of the two page spread was intentionally made for readers to distinguish the king’s side/army from the people of we, who celebrate and rejoice. The second page looks full of hope while the first is transitioning to the celebration scene, with people of all colors crowding together in a collective embrace. But notice that the fallen king’s throne is positioned in a corner while the king’s demotivated army spreads all over the pages (some even join in on the celebration!) 4) The king's soldiers are masked by helmets that are chiseled and blocky, but the shape of their faces is still seen as rounded just like all the colored people of We, showing that they mask themselves to protect their anonymity but are still quite human on the inside. Without a leader, they disperse, but some of them redeem themselves by joining in the celebration, while others not so much (it’s not easy having cognitive dissonance!) 5) I wanted to portray a transition from darkness to light, and how in the end we eventually find ourselves back together. Perhaps I'm way too much of a humanist/dreamer. :) Thank you so much for this opportunity to illustrate a scene from Purple Rules! I aspire to inspire, and I hope this image serves as a reflection of hope for the world.
tw_user 321 Weeks 4 VotesThe aim of my second image I created was meant to capture the king's scary aura backed by their army! It was a quick second attempt to see how good the atmosphere would be. I also wanted to play around with lighting in this one.
tw_user 321 Weeks 2 VotesWhen I first read this story, I knew immediately that I had to illustrate the king themself, flaunting their ego to the people of We. I could really feel the king's pride emanating in his words. It did not feel right to put them on the same level as the people, so to truly represent the king I put them on a pedestal, or in this case a pillar, to show how highly he thinks himself to be. I really appreciate the story's message and inclusion of complex themes, like equality and individuality, to be introduced to young kids, as it is very important to be aware of these topics these days. Over all, this was a very enjoyable project to work on!
tw_user 321 Weeks 4 VotesAfter reading the story, it immediately reminded me of something I would have read when I was younger. When reading the story, this image came to mind, and I was inspired to participate. I made my submission with watercolors and ink. Drawing and painting have always been passions of mine, and in the fall I am going to college, majoring in illustration. Storybook illustration is a future career goal of mine.
tw_user 321 Weeks 94 VotesHere are some of the beginning sketches for characters and what spread I chose. I would be really excited to do this because I really agree with the message of the book and I think it’s so cool that teenagers are being chose to illustrate!
tw_user 321 Weeks 4 VotesI really wanted to show how someone who does bad things like this can be just like you and me so I gave them human-ish features.Anyone can do that and I believe that’s part of what the book is trying to teach to the young readers.
tw_user 321 Weeks 27 VotesI took inspiration from the open line of this book, this fictional land being closer then you might understand.
tw_user 321 Weeks 25 VotesI was inspired to draw this scene because I felt it was a pivotal moment where the king realizes he's beginning to disappear. I wanted to try portraying the emotion he might've felt once he drank the potion, from his sadness to his horror of seeing himself lose all color. It was also really fun for me to create an intricate design for the color cure, giving it a purple color and beautiful shine to make it look for appealing for the king to want to drink.
tw_user 321 Weeks 233 VotesAfter reading the poem, I aimed towards a more child book illustration with different textures and spots off colors sticking out, and I figured it would be the perfect theme for the illustration since it involves many different colors. I wanted to make a contrast between the people and the backgrounds so it would seem like the people would be more vibrant than the background itself.
tw_user 321 Weeks 20 VotesCharacter Design Sketches for King
tw_user 321 Weeks 15 VotesI illustrated the scene where the people of We come together to make the "cure" for the Purple King. I wanted to visually express the value and beauty in the teamwork and unity of a diverse group of people. I felt that this scene, where the people actively work towards a common goal (instead of simply "getting along") got to the heart of what it means to accept differences and work with each other, something that today's society often fails to do. There are people of various ages and colors working with Jefferson Blue and each other to take a part in developing a cure; for example, adult chemists help with the cure-making process, younger people read textbooks or do their own experimentation, and other people record the group's work on the chalkboard. I showed that the people work day and night by having two windows- one showing day and one showing night. The smiling faces on the sun and moon show that teamwork and making the cure are indeed good and right things to do. I also wanted to convey the harmony and teamwork among the people despite the difficult situation they are in; I showed this by creating an overall warmer tone to the piece and using a soft and round drawing style. I also added the phrase #WEcandoit to the chalkboard in the back to reflect the people's optimism and determination (in a punny way).
